Turf

Sarah Olmstead

Turf is always a fun topic to discuss, at least to me it’s fun. Keeping turf in great health and looking as beautiful as possible is a full time job or at least it seems like it. I compiled a few tips to help with this task.

  1. The height of the turf might be the most important factor you can do to help your turf. By leaving your turf at 3”-4”, you give shade to the soil and limit the ability for weeds to grow.
  2. Quality seed- applying a high quality seed is ideal in any application and depending on your location (Full shade or Full Sun) a 4-way fescue is a great one. Seeding more than once a year is a great option especially in high traffic areas.
  3. When mowing, always use sharp blades, when blades are dull they tend to rip the blades of grass which prolongs the healing or callusing over on the blade. The prolonged healing or callusing over allows fungus and other bacteria to infiltrate and cause damage.
  4. Water- Irrigation is great when you have it but if you don’t have an irrigation system set up sprinklers and hoses to give the turf it’s needed H20.
    • The best time to water is in the  morning or evening.
    • A deep watering is preferred to a shallow watering.
      1. A few times a week, every other day or every three days and let it run for 30 min or so. That’s the deep watering you want.
