Summer is here and the landscapes are in full bloom. If your plants are showing signs of ‘heat exhaustion’ it might be time to think about Missouri Native Plants. Native plants have many beneficial reasons to use in the landscape.
First is the reduction of water usage, which occurs after the first year of planting. Like any new plants, watering still needs to occur, especially in a drought, but after the plants are established, minimal watering will be needed.
Second, the use of fertilizers and pesticides are not needed or minimal use. Native plants grow in our native soils and can defend themselves against fungus, bacteria and pests.
The last but perhaps the best benefit is the insects they host, like the very popular butterfly, but all pollinators enjoy dining on the sweet, sweet nectar of Natives.
